Editing in Progress for Film Poster

BEFORE

AFTER

CLOSE UP - BEFORE

CLOSE UP - AFTER

The screenshot images above represents the editing development for our final version for our film poster. I was trying to fill in the gap of Asmaa's hair as you can see from the before image that there is a space between her hair and it looks out of proportions and ruins the composition of the overall image.

So in this case, I have used the stamp clone shown below. The stam clone allows to fill in the gap by getting the same shade and pattern from the other part of her hair by clicking the buttons, Alt key then click to a certain part of the hair that will match with the gap; which I did. This was easy to do as I have had some experience in the past based on my editing knowledge of using ADOBE Photoshop software.

In addition, you are able to see the effects we have used for the level of brightness, contrast, exposure and curves and others of the film poster. These features were included to the poster because the original look for the photo shoot image was too dark so we needed to brighten the image a bit more by increasing the level of curves and brightness of the image.

However, we still need to maintain a contrast of getting a dark shade in order to introduce the genre of our film, which is horror/thriller. I have used other case studies and real media products such as Orphan, Saw, Final Destination and many other similar genre of our film because all of them portray a dark and subtle house style including colour scheme, effects, layout structure and journalism text (elements) for a film poster.

Developing the title of the film poster (colour scheme)

I was exploring and trying to figure out which shade of red taken from the blood of Asmaa's hand would fit perfectly for the title colour of the film poster. Then, I have picked the darker shade of red as it will appear more realistic and appealing towards the target audiences because if I were to choose a bright shade of red, it will appear a new perspective and becomes friendly and that is not something I am trying to convey.

The shade of red that I have chosen is the part where Asmaa put blood on her mouth as it appear a dark vixen colour shade of red. As a group, we have suffered complex as it was 2 against one as one of my team members did not like the chosen colour of the title. But after convincing what we were trying to convey towards the target audiences, she finally agreed to it as she stated that it had worked well in the end so everything has blended well together. After, I was able to include the same shade of red to other element features to add on a film poster which was the tagline, billing box and many more.

Development of Initial Version of Film Poster

The screenshot above represents one of the first stages of me having to create the initial version of our print product, film poster. I have added the billing box at the bottom of the page as seen in other real media products as well as case studies I have seen and carefully looked at. I have also started to include the production logo of the short film as well as the sponsors that helped developed the film and being able to help us advertised our print products as a whole.

I was already familiar when it comes to using ADOBE Photoshop so I did not have any struggles and problems since I was continuously discussing different ideas with my team members as they individually focus on producing other print products, which was film review and writing up the journalism for our review.

Location Release: Confirmation to use Abbotts Park

I have emailed the owner of Abbotts Park, Walthamstow in order to get permission to use the park location to produce and shoot our film. Then, they have replied back stating how they allow the filming to happen but we just needed to fill a form in order to illustrate that the filming has happened and they need to keep a record of the filming. I, Geneva have personally filled it in for the team.

Also, notice how we emailed the owner of the park for permission is because we have emailed them before hand, however, we have emailed the wrong email address so we, as a group have only realised how we got in contact with the wrong email address so we needed to go back and researched to find the correct email address and it was the Walthamstow government for confirmation to use the park. However, when we went to film on the day- a member of staff in the park, a cleaner, has stated that we needed permission to film our short film from him before hand and we have explained how we already got in contact over the head office, the one responsible of confirming to use the location.

Editing our Short Film Review (Process)

Anita has started creating our film review and then we took in turns as she was stuck and needed our help in order to develop and improve it. We have used various real media products as shown on our research case studies and this has benefited us by helping us improve our film review.

From then on, we have improved as we filled in the empty spaces of the double page spread and it has saved our time management. We were using the InDesign software as we have had experience on it before, last year when we were creating our own music magazine. This has helped me remember some of the basic knowledge that I have learnt a year before and used it when I was creating the film review. The layout structure was quite complicated because there were different layout structure to choose from based on our case studies so we decided to keep it simple and structure the images and journalism text in common places like you would normally see in magazines.

Also, we have encountered and maintained the same house style for example, the colour scheme of our video and print product which was red, black and white This was to illustrate the genre of our film which was horror/thriller based.

Contact Sheet: Photo-shoot for Print Products

FINAL CHOSEN PHOTOGRAPH FOR FILM POSTER

Here is a contact sheet that we have shot using A1 studio in the media apartment. We have booked the schedule on Monday 22nd December 2014 at 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. We were discussing as a group over which image would suit the best for the film poster and we all agreed on the last still image as we think it is more significant and horrifying to look at compared to the other images that we have captured.

Film Poster Draft

This is our draft look for our film poster as we have looked at our past case studies for our short film, having to look specifically at the horror/thriller genre based of films. The case studies as well as other real media products that we mainly looked at is Host, Orphan and Nightmare in the Elm Street as they have applied blood on to the model of the poster and we intended to do the same, initially.

The use of blood will link to how Priscilla has committed suicide because of Diana constantly picking on her in school. As a result, the use of blood will indicate a subtle hint that Priscilla's plan is to secretly ruin Diana's college life by tempting to kill her. Her own revenge planned.

Initial Ideas: Update on Film Review

For this update, we have split each members to carry out different tasks in order to produce our initial designs for our film review and poster for our short film cover.

Asmaa's role was to take care of editing the photogrpahy images that Anita & Asmaa captured during the scheduled photoshoot. She has played around with different levels of brightness and contrast for our picture.

Call Sheet: Photography Shoot

REMINDER: I, Geneva, did not take part in the photo shoot because I was not feeling well so I was at home. However, both of my team, Asmaa & Anita were able to follow through and had the photo shoot without me because we could not re-schedule since we had a deadline to start working on our initial print products. In the end, I was contented and happy with how the photography came out as they conveyed an appropriate feel for our genre of our short film, which was horror/thriller.

Permission to use for Non-diegetic sound (Charlie Clouser's Twitter Account)

We have used Charlie Clouser's soundtrack of horror from youtube and we were seeking permission to use his free copyright soundtrack that he produced for our short film. We took ages to find his twitter as there was no other way for us to look for his email as he seems like he was not a active person. We twitted him stating clearance to use his free copyright soundtrack.

UPDATE: Up until now, he did not tweet or got in contact with us as he's last tweet was last year in March (2014.)

Evaluation on Audience Feedback (Initial Draft of KARMA)

KARMA: Initial Feedback Obtained

On this focus group feedback, we have gained some positive comments. Most of the people in the focus group were our target audiences, which were 16 years old and above, boys and girls. They like the idea of the flashback and how we added a black and white effect in order to indicate the occurrence of something happening in the past and this will portrait the history and past relations between characters.

However, some of the people including my mentor has said a few suggestions and film mistakes that we needed to fix in order to produce an official and professional version of our short film. After, as a group- we have act upon it and began to change and improve our initial version of our short film in order to satisfy the target audiences in producing a horror/thriller film.
